Author’s Note: I realize the temptation is overwhelming, but please avoid any manga spoilers in the comments. Most of you have shown admirable restraint thus far – please continue to do so for the remainder of the series.
Clearly, the gearshift lever broke some time ago.
One thing’s for sure – either Tokyo Ghoul has a second season announcement in its back pocket or this is one of the greatest rush jobs in anime history. It’s a fun ride but exhausting, and it would be a shame if the “Locomotive Breath” pacing of the last few episode is for no higher purpose than to cram as much action into this season as possible. Still more new characters continue to join the fray, the angst gets more profound, and the violence more graphic and shocking. It’s quite a trip.
Much of this episode is a straightforward depiction of what’s effectively an all-out war between the CCG – under the direction of Marude Itsuki (Ueda Yuuji) – and the assembled ghoul forces of the 11th Ward. The TV news cameras are on-hand and the action is hot and heavy – there are over 1000 humans in the attack force, and Ayato notes that it’s arrived faster than the Ghouls expected. Neither he or the other higher-ups seem especially worried, but it’s clear that they’re expecting a serious fight.
Not a part of that is Jason, though he is at the heart of the episode’s other main thread. He’s got Ken tied up in his “room“, which is basically an ad hoc torture chamber set up under the dome of the shopping center Aogiri has commandeered. This is tough stuff – torture porn, bordering on guro, and there are very few occasions where I see it used in anime and don’t consider it taking the cheap path to shock value and titillation. It’s a tough call with Tokyo Ghoul, though, because even before the reveal at the end of the episode it’s clear that this torture is an important plot point – that it’s going to change Ken in a profound way. And would we get a sense of that if we were spared the gruesomeness of what Jason is doing to him?
We are spared some of it, of course, courtesy of black bars, and I’d be very surprised if the torture sequence in the manga wasn’t much longer and more graphic (they usually are). But the message is clear enough, starting with the hypodermic through the eyeball (a sure-fire wince moment from the audience) and continuing through every one of Ken’s increasingly agonized screams. Jason may not be the strongest being yet introduced in this series (I suspect we met him late in this episode) but he’s certainly the most evil and sadistic we’ve seen. Shinohara explains to Amon that it came as a result of a hideous torture session at the hands of a “problem officer”, but however he got there, Jason has arrived as a pretty disturbing place. Banjou and his friends do what they can to ease Ken’s suffering but that’s not much – that’s clearly on the shoulders of Anteiku, who’ve launched a rescue mission using the CCG assault as cover.
There are opportunities for various characters old and new to show off their powers during the battle. After a brief encounter with the Rabbit Amon takes on the S-Class “Bin Brothers” using Kura – the Quinque bequeathed to him by Mado. The Gourmet (who apparently recovered by feasting on himself) and Yomo are fighting side by side, for the very practical reason that Yomo isn’t planning to let Tsukiyama out of his sight, and they end-up matched against Mr. High-C – a presumably superpowered ghoul who’s new on the scene. And Juuzou steals Marude’s beloved motorcycle in order to make a stylish entrance into the ghoul stronghold, where he proceeds to wipe out everything in his path.
But the main event here appears to be the arrive of the “One-Eyed Owl“. He (presumably) makes a creepy entrance past the window next to which Amon is standing, and turns up on the roof – which is where Shinohara and Amon have headed. I don’t know if this is the same ghoul as Aogiri’s One-Eyed King, but it seems likely it’s not given that he was quite specifically referred to by a different name. Whoever he is, it’s clear from everyone in the CCG’s reactions that he’s the baddest badass they could have feared facing here – Marude’s instructions to Shinohara are basically to send most of the men away, because there’s no point in everyone on the roof dying there and then.
I keep expecting the story to be dialed back at least a little, to narrow in focus as we near the end of the cour, but we’re still in the expansion phase. Everything depends on what happens after the 12th episode, because there’s no way Morita-sensei or anyone else is enough of a miracle worker to tie all these loose ends together satisfactorily in two episodes. He is enough of a miracle worker to keep things coherent and relatively orderly despite the breakneck pace, which is no small achievement and a big reason why Tokyo Ghoul continues to be such an entertaining series.
One final note: It was announced today that the Tokyo Ghoul manga will be ending this month, which seems to have taken most of the readership by surprise. No way to know what impact this might have on a possible second season for the anime – or indeed, whether there could have been an impact going in the other direction, though that seems unlikely.

The dense censoring made me take to the manga to see the torturing…
Nope nope nope nope nope nope nope. Kaneki better kill the mothereffing shit out that guy for what he did.

Probably not a spoiler, but since it’s from the manga directly I’ll tread cautiously
Jason kept on cutting off his toes and fingers and letting them regenerate, then repeating the process. Once Jason was done torturing for the moment he’d feed Kaneki and wait for the injection to fully wear off then repeat the process.
That bug was placed into Kaneki’s ear so I’m assuming it either ate it’s way around..or it just was to be incredibly uncomfortable on his end.
From the looks of it, there was more, but that was what the chapter highlighted
The anime shows these details without explaining them too much:
– Obviously the needle was injected into Kaneki’s eye (not just the eyelid)
– Kaneki’s toes are different shade of color than his feet (after multiple amputations and regeneration cycles; his fingers are the same)
– Jason takes out a centipede (and puts it where no bug should ever be allowed to go)
– Now Kaneki’s hair is white from the stress of the torture
Being the ghoul that I am (having read the manga), im utterly disappointed in this adaptation.
Hopefully they are going to announce 2nd season for manga during the event in October.

Anyway, concerning your “final note”- I think the author is a giant troll. But it sure is the same feeling as if all your favorite characters in a story died at once. Well, lets wait if a second season is announed, whether its fore the anime (unlikely) or the manga.

This anime adaption is atrocious. The Akame ga Kill adaption isn’t perfect, but much more aligned to the anime.
As for as the manga, I think Tokyo Ghoul is a great manga, but I like Akame ga Kill too. They’re entirely different genres and series though, so comparing them is utterly stupid, even in the moronic way you did.

So you’re telling me (ULTRA MEGA SPOILER FOLLOWING!!! IF YOU AREN’T READING THE MANGA, DON’T CONTINUE!!!)
Obviously the following spoiler is as heavy as tools’: Its my opinion, that this is for “impact”. If you read the forums, they were all like: “well, and after Kaneki has eaten the ghouls on the floor,…Im shipping Kaneki x Eto now…” or “I dont want Amon to become a one-eyed ghoul”- basicall noone believed they were dead. Same with Hide. But we’re supposed to feel really desperate. And the author managed excactly that by announcing the last volume. But if I take a look at how he managed to put all his details together in the course of the manga, I cant think that this story is just over.
Some say chapter 72 was called “halfway”, and now we’re at chapter 143. But that would still support my opinion, cause it would mean ishida had a “plan”, and hes not ending it now because hes lost interest or something. and there are far too many secrets left for ishidas concept for the story to end now.(and my own theory about what happened in the last 3 chapters also supports me;)
Then again, the hints with Arimas “you cant go further than V(olume)14, that some readers found, or the thing that Takatsuki said a while ago: she wanted to write a different story…well you cant be sure.
But I personally think its kind of a part of the story, -in the meta level, kind of like Blair Witch Project or something, where they insisted it really happened. So lets see;) But I admit that part of me is in denial…
Since the manga is apparently ending on a whatthefucknote-from-the-readers, I sincerely hope there’s a second season. Because reasons.

For clarification, Funimation mistranslated Tsukiyama’s “High-C” bit. He was actually saying “HySy”, the name of Uta’s art-mask shop. So Mr. HySy = Uta, and the guy they were fighting is Noro.
Another thing that’s lost in translation from Japanese to English: Juuzou (什造) can also be written as 13 (十三). Besides the obvious connotation, Japanese viewers would be able to notice the visual pun (under spoiler in case you want to figure it out yourself)in Suzuya’s character design, with his XIII hairpins.
It seems like Morita will be personally directing next episode for the first time since the premiere. Looking forward to it.
And to say that the announcement took readers by surprise is an understatement. I woke up at 6:00 AM, checked my phone, and nearly shit myself in bed. There were spoilers saying that Tokyo Ghoul would receive a magazine cover and a double-page color spread on the same day the last episode airs. I thought that it would be to announce a second season. Dear God, was I wrong. To think that both the anime and the manga (at least the first part???) will end on the same day… What incredible timing… Ishida’s radio silence on his normally active (and hilarious) twitter account suddenly makes sense.
It seems both Studio Pierrot and Ishida Sui like to leave fans in complete darkness regarding the future of the series. Very funny. Ha ha.

Been lurking for a while, so apologies in advance.
TG isn’t that amazing of a manga to me, and I have thus far been a massive fan of the adaptation, but the way they did this episode made me cringe. (FYI: the transition was clumsy, but I still liked the the re-arrangment between the first manga arc and the Gourmet Arc.)
Yes, this episode is major torture porn, yes it is much worse in the manga, but the way this was handled into anime leaves me in the position that they almost CANNOT adapt the source material in a 2nd or 3rd season just because of the torture scenes being butchered. In addition, resolving this standoff requires more moving parts than the whole anime so far has used in a total 11 episodes… In virtually every tense moment afterwards in the manga there is a callback to that sequence of scenes, and now we need to wave magic wands to make them happen in the first place?

So… they just show the centipede for a split second here? No talking? How are people gonna remember the scene unless the animation studio really hammers that into people? Getting your toes and fingers repeatedly cut off and doing the counting backwards thing to keep sane is WAAY more horrible than getting crawled on by a centipede. Speaking of which…
And: (major story spoilers, do not click if you haven’t read to manga chapter 100)
I read the reason Kaneki is the protagonist as him caring about PEOPLE. He goes into Jason’s torture for the sake of others in the manga. Jason identifies that and surgically stabs at it with the choice scene. The centipede was bad, but it left him with a horrible, formative memory. What Kaneki later brings up (and argues towards others in trying to convince them) as what broke him is always the choice. Which is character consistent – if they would have shown that instead of the centipede, I could have bought it. But it still leaves the problem of Jason, how that plays into Aogiri, and other issues that will actually make me read the blog posts about Tokyo Ghoul before watching it. If they rush this and wrap the current arc in one episode, I’m dropping it even if they announce a sequel. Partially because of getting robbed of amazing action, partially because they really can’t drive a lot of the characters forward if they don’t spend years retconning….
Did anyone else also had their brain blown at the farcical bike steal scene? How had somebody ever thought it was a good idea to change the tone at a completely weird moment?
Anyway, the recurring torture scenes I think is a standard way to dramatically change the character… Except it feels completely unbelievable, if the scenes are rushed in the interval of 5 minutes?! Such a drastic character change cannot happen so fast. That’s why in the Game of Thrones, the similar thing was done throughout a whole season (or maybe more, I remember poorly). But of course you could say with 12 episodes it is impossible… Then make it a 2-cour at the start? Or don’t waste whole 2 episodes for a ridiculous ark with Gourmet?
