Kimetsu no Yaiba – 04

(Saish Senbetsu)
“Final Selection”

Quick apologies for the delay in my reviews this week folks. I got a little bump on the head and the doctor ordered me to stay away from screens as much as possible amongst other things. Unfortunately for the doctor, and myself, I couldnt stay away. So here I am and heres my review of this past Saturdays fourth episode of Kimetsu no Yaiba.

___

The result from the battle against the morphed demon is the culmination of Tanjirous long and arduous training sessions with Urokodaki, Sabito, and Makomo. Hes mastered techniques and forms of many kinds. Hes even learned to silently name them as he hands out the final blow. I’m glad I’m learning about the techniques he’s using without having him actually yell it out before striking (Inuyasha style). And he’s much more agile now that he’s mastered the scent of the ‘opening thread.’ Although he’s learned so much already, it looks like he’ll have a long way to go. He’s kind and optimistic but has yet to fully believe in his own abilities. I’m sure as he progresses, he’ll build character and confidence. Let’s just hope it’s not detrimental to the traits that make him who he is.

On another note, this world they live in has certainly piqued my curiosity. Spirits still roam the earth and Im assuming Tanjirou can sense them because of his heightened sense of smell. Demons gets stronger as they intake more humans and they can even develop abilities. Im wondering if those abilities are limited to physiological traits as we witnessed in this episode or if well be encountering demons with telekinesis, elemental, or other powers of sorts. They also live in a world where the underaged are sent into the wilderness to either brutally kill or be brutally murdered. Yet, there seems to be some kind of balance that exists within this universe. Although demons walk the earth, we discover wisteria flowers can repel demons and there’s an alloy which affects them the same way sunlight would.

In this particular episode, wisteria trees in full bloom act as an unbreachable barrier surrounding the base of the mountain where the Demon Corps Final Selection takes place. Demons are trapped on the mountain awaiting their fate, some for years as we find out. It absolutely broke my heart to discover that Sabito and Makomo were murdered by such a foul creature. Based on a comment last week, I had a hunch theyd never been alive to begin with but it wasnt satisfying to find out that they were murdered before they could even become full fledged demon slayers. I suppose they (and Urokodakis eleven other pupils) have now been avenged. However, their murders, depicted by silhouettes, were horribly gruesome to see. Imagining their final moments as such definitely does not do their characters justice. Im hoping their connection to Tanjirou will keep them around for a little longer, maybe even to help him for whats to come.

What is to come though? Prior to the Final Selection, at the foot of the mountain where all the pupils are greeted by some eerie twins, we get quick glimpses of some of the characters weve seen in the OP. I wonder if well get to see them fight alongside (or against) Tanjirou during the Final Selection. Seven days in the woods alone is going to make for a pretty slow episode next Saturday so Im hoping alliances will be created. Will these be for better or for worse? Who knows… Maybe Tanjirou will continue to help the weaker trainees while the strong band together… Im just throwing a few theories out there in preparation. Oh, and one other theory Ive had on my mind for a while. Nezuko will only wake when she tastes human blood, and I bet you itll be Tanjirous. *dramatic drum roll*

I’m taking bets – not really though.

I really like how the flow of this story is unfolding. We’re not jolted by a bunch of events, but each thingthat happens fits perfectly with the story and his skills.@zztop — yea for the 26 episodes!

I got a little bump on the head…

That’s why you have to keep a safe distance from the viewingscreen and not watch your Anime in a darkened room. And trynot to have any blunt objects in your hand(s) when you palmfaceafter watching some horrible episode of something or other…Just sayin’ 🙂 Hope your bump feels better!

I generally liked the episode though I kinda disliked the battle against the demon. 1.) Why would their master give his pupils masks? For “luck”? Didn’t really work, even without the demon taking the masks as symbols of the children he wanted to kill. 2.)”You will not be able to cut my neck! I’m sure of it!” CUT. That was kinda…not very surprising…Well, I hope I can take the next demons more seriously…

Why wouldn’t Urokodaki give his pupils masks? He himself wears one, and it’s clear that this particular demon has managed to skip under the radar and become stronger than the parameters of the exam. It’s likely Urokodaki has no idea a demon he captured for the exam decades ago has managed to survive, become too strong for most novices, has a grudge against Urokodaki in particular, and can recognize his students by the masks. Urokodaki just knows his students keep dying in the exams.

He also gave him an “kimono” in his Style. he also represent his “house” name. So this Mask and Kimono is part to show the others he is an pupil of Urokodaki. He took him in and let him wear the “House symbols”
