Zero no Tsukaima ~Futatsuki no Kishi~ – 10

Summary:

Louise and Saito arrive in Albion at the Tristain base at Rosyth and immediately get a mission to take out the enemy force at the city of South Gotha with Louise’s void magic. The reason for this mission is because Henrietta wants to avoid dragging the civilians there into the war, and Louise agrees to it. Although Saito’s not too happy about being used for the war and about killing or being killed, he still pilots the Zero for Louise towards their target. However, when she tries to use her void magic, Louise fizzes out, and the Zero soon comes under attack by two enemy dragon riders. Saito manages to shoot both of the two dragons down, but the Zero takes some damage in the process and crashes into the mountain. The two are thus forced to find shelter from the cold, but with Saito still shivering so much, Louise hugs his arm. When Saito suggests that they warm each other with their naked bodies, Louise slams him against the wall in embarrassment and anger. She soon starts to regret doing this and checks up on him only to find that he’s been knocked out. Worried about him, she unbuttons her shirt and snuggles up to him, telling him that he can’t die because she hasn’t answered back his confession yet. After Saito wakes up fine the next morning, Louise prevents Derfflinger from revealing that she kept him warm all night with her body.

Having learned of the apparent failure of Louise’s mission, Henrietta is pressured to send her army to attack South Gotha. On the Albion side, Sheffield learns about this, but she decides against reinforcements. Instead, she orders the defenders to retreat and to take as much food with them as they can so that they can deprive their enemy of supplies. Saito meanwhile find the body of one of the dragons that he downed, but its rider suddenly jumps out and attacks him. This knight fires off one magic spell before fainting from the wound on his foot, and to Saito’s surprise, Louise wants him to carry the guy. When he does so though, the knight attacks him again, and although Saito has a clear advantage, he decides against killing the knight despite the knight himself yelling for Saito to do it. Saito is against the war and killing, and he tells the knight that he only wants to protect Louise and get them home safely. A little while later, as Saito continues through the snowy forest with their enemy on his back, Louise asks Saito how she should tell Henrietta about this failure. She worries because Henrietta had trusted her in giving her this mission, but Saito feels that she doesn’t have any choice other than to just tell Henrietta since he doesn’t think that Louise would commit seppuku or anything.

Saito then raises the point that Louise came to fight despite there not being much difference in whether she alone succeeded or failed. Louise agrees that her role might not be important, but as a noble, she has to be of service to Henrietta – if she can’t do that, then she’s better off dead. It is at this point that the Albion knight speaks up about how he admires her attitude, and Louise decides to finally introduce herself. Revealing that his name is Henry Stafford, the knight starts asking about Saito’s Zero, but Saito claims that it’s a military secret. When Henry compares the Zero’s speed to his fallen dragon, Saito and Louise realize that they killed an irreplaceable friend of his, but when Louise tries to apologize, Henry points out that it’s kill or be killed in this war. Since Saito claims that he’s against murder, Henry questions what Saito is fighting for, and Saito can only say that it’s to protect the person he loves. This makes Henry wonder if Saito is fighting for Louise’s sake, so Saito clarifies that it also includes the people at school and Henrietta. With Saito saying that he’s against being ordered to kill someone, Louise tells Henry that Saito’s not a noble, so he doesn’t understand honor or pride. She and Saito then start arguing about this, and Louise ends up saying that honor is the most important thing for a noble.

Henry agrees with Louise, but he also admits that he’d like to live only for love, and he feels that nobles are the ones willing to separate from their loved ones for the sake of honor. Having seen a picture of a girl in Henry’s locket when he dropped it earlier, Louise now asks him if that girl is the person Henry separated from, and Henry reveals that he volunteered for the military after canceling his engagement with his fiancée. After hearing Henry talk about how he’s going to die eventually if this war continues, Saito declares that Henry is the worst and that nobles who die for honor are just fools. Henry gets angry enough to punch Saito, but Saito punches back into the snow instead of into Henry’s face. He feels that Henry is a person and a man, so he should want to survive and return to his fiancée by any means. Louise then notes that nobles have to be prepared for death in going to battle, but she also feels that until death comes at the end, Henry should do his best for the sake of living. She thus urges him to live, to go home, and to marry his fiancée. Suddenly, the sound of a gunshot rings out through the forest, and the three of them realize that more Albion forces are nearby.

Going their separate ways, Louise and Saito hide nearby while Henry is picked up by the Albion men and directs them to the other side of the mountain to search for the enemy. Julio then arrives looking for them, and the three escape on his dragon. Returning to a relieved Henrietta, Louise apologizes for not being able to be of service, and she vows to make up for it by asking Henrietta to give her any mission, no matter how dangerous. Much to Saito’s frustration, Louise declares that fighting and dying for Henrietta are the greatest honors for nobles.

Preview:

Despite this taking place in the war zone and involving mainly Louise and Saito (as opposed to the Agnès focus we’ve been getting), I wasn’t a huge fan of this episode. I liked seeing Louise and the Zero in action, but those only carries the episode so far. Most of the second half with the discussion about nobles and honor was, well, boring. It’s all probably setting Saito and Louise up for a falling out over ideology, but given the track record of this season so far, I have to wonder how interesting that’d really be. In short, with only two episodes left, I doubt they can do anything really meaningful with the story, though I’d love for the writers to prove me wrong.

  10. bearzerger

Judging from the pics they completely abandon the novels and they don’t intend to return. I won’t even bother downloading this ep. The anime is just a too shallow version of the actual story for my tastes.

I roughly translated a part of the novel on the ep9 events, there are grammer and spelling mistakes.

…The remaining team of Menville started to panic after they learnt of the death of their caption.
Kirche and Tabitha, with the surviving Gunner team did not miss this chance and rushed into the hall again.
The enemies are being down one by one, among the screams of those female students taking cover on the floor.
This time Agnes ran a sword deep into one of the mage.
    “Ark….”
    However the sword is stuck.
An enemy mage took this chance and shoots his magic at Agnes’s back…
and a number of magical arrows flying towards Agnes.
All seems lost as Kirche, Tabitha nor the Gunners are able to react quick enough.
Suddenly, a black shadow rushes past in front of Agnes, blocks the coming arrows with his body, and starts his own spells right away. A flaming Serpent appears from the tip of his wand and burned the enemy mage to ashes in a flash.
Agnes is staring blankly at Colbert.
Colbert trying to keep his eyes open ask Agnes with all his cares:
    “…you alright?”
Agnes nods her head in reflex.
The next second, blood starts pouring out from Colbert’s mouth and he drops on the floor.
The students start rushing toward him in terror and at once aiming their healing spells at Colbert.
Only that…the wounds are too serious.
    At this moment…
Agnes finally comes to her senses and points her sword at the fallen Colbert.
The students all look at her in shock.
“Hey! What do you think you are doing!” Kriche cries out.
Colbert looks up at Agnes with his eyes, which starts to lost focus.
“You…so you were the experiment task force’s leader? The one tore off the list in army databank, was it you aswell?”
    Colbert nods his head.
“I’ll tell you this then. I’m the sole survivor of D’Angleterre!”
    “…are you…” (…sou ka…)
“Why did you destroyed our hometown? Talk!”
“Stop it! He’s wounded! This is serious wounds can’t you see! Don’t force him to talk!”
Shouts Montmorency, giving her all into the water magic (healing) while crying.
    “Say it!”
Colbert lower his head and answers:
    “…That was an order.”
    “Order?”
“…We had been told there was an epidemic. And we were also told if we do not burn everything the epidemic will spread. We were given no choice.”
    “How can it…That’s a lie!”
“…correct. I learnt of the truth afterward too. All that was nothing but an act to “catch the new religon group”. I’ve been living with the weight of sin everyday. All I did was exactly like him…as Menville said, including women and childern, I let none alive. This is not a thing to be forgiven. Since that day, not once I can forget this. After I left the army I never used fire again…I vowed not to use fire for destruction ever again.”
“…do you think only with this the many you’ve killed will get back their life!”
    Colbert shakes his head.
    Then…slowly, he closed his eyes.
Although Montmorency still giving her all into the spell…maybe she finally burns all her magic power and she soon passes out on the floor. To treat wounds of this level one must use specialised potions…
    There’s none around.
She used her magical power trying to cover the lack of potions…but there’s always a limit to how much one can push it.
Likewise, the “water” mages use up their own power too and start passing out one by one.
Agnes swings her sword again at Colbert, who now cycled by the fallen water mages’ bodies surrounding him.
However this time, Kirche launches herself forward and cover Colbert with her own body. The smug smile that she always wears on her face is nowhere to be seen. She says with a very serious face:
    “I beg you, please stop!”
“Sod off! I stay alive until now waiting for this moment! 20 years! I’ve been waiting for this for 20 years!!”
    “No please! I beg you!”
    “Out of my way!”
Agnes and Kirche stare at each other.
At this moment before sparks flying through the air…
“Ah!” Kirche suddenly comes to, and holding Colbert’s arm tight.
“I tell you to sod off!”
Kirche asks once again, with a cold voice:
    “Please, lower you sword.”
    “What are you kidding!”
Kirche lowers her head and says with a quiet tone:
    “He is already dead.”
Hearing this, Agnes loosen all the power of her grisp.
Agnes, kneels down in shock and her body shaking slightly.
“…I am not going to ask you not to hate him. However, should at least pray for him a little. Maybe it’s true that professor Colbert was your enemy…but he is also now your saviour. He used his body to defend you, saving your life.”
    Kirche says in pain.
Once again, Agnes stands up powerlessly, keeps saying words that cannot be clearly understand then lowers her sword. All the students in the hall closed their eyes, only Kirche have hers open wide, watching all this.
The sword stuck hard into the floor in front of Colbert.
Agnes turns and leaves the sence slowly.

After Agnes had disappeared into the distance…Kirche gets ready to carry up Colbert’s body. She then notices the ruby ring on his finger. That is like a burning flame, bright red ruby.
Kirche looks at the ruby…and tears filled her eyes without noticing.
    Colbert saved herself too.
She had always sees him an idiot, he however, had just shouted “do not touch my students” no so long ago, and protected her on his own. Felling the emotion and love, Kirche broken down with tears in seconds.

The events in the novel (book 6) were actaully telling 3 stories, 4 if you count the Louise visits her home arc. The anime only animated the Colbert part, but what also happening around the same time are Saito, Louise, Dragoon team’s first mission in the war (some cool air/ plane/ magic vs dragons battle wth speed), and Guiche, that fat boy + some other student’s first hand experience of battleship warfare and horror of a real war.

  18. Ryunatta

louise did a kamichama karin manga save XD no fair not even the anime got that sence

  19. Terry-Kun

lol, looks like another good episode…guess I’ll have to download this too…

  20. setsuke

Hmmm now it’s really strange hearing what Louise was saying in the preview, it really seem like it’ll show her wearing the neko costume like in novel(but there doen’t seem to be any sirius quarrel between them) so does that means there’s a high chance they’re gonna end this with Saito confronting 70000 soldier seeing all this talking bout honour and nobel, then being found by the elf? If thats true then there’s really gonna be a 3rd season

  21. Julio

    @setsuke

next should be the failure and haste retreat when all hell break loose, then maybe the sence with Louise and Saito in the church + wine and julio waiting outside. Ends up with Saito in the forest I think. There’s a loophole as Siesta is not there to give Saito the drug so maybe julio will comes in handy.

  22. Woot, thanks a lot. That bit of translation was definitely than the anime i think. Sighs, i think Baka translation will stop since it has been licenced; does anyone know where to read chinese novels?

Note: We are only not allowed to ask for links right? Could someone just tell me the website name if they know of one? Thanks

  23. ordnance11

I have a feeling the next episode will be a set-up for Saito’s greatest feat.

  24. Isper

Those who have read the novel know where this is going. The reason this episode was so big on the honor thing is because its a big part in the novel as well. I just wish there were more episodes considering the last one of this season is the farthest Ive been able to get.

  25. rairyu

i just realized.. they guy’s name is Henry Stafford, in English history, he’s supposed to be the 2nd duke of Buckingham >

  30. Mazinga

Gaaah, only two eps to go? I hope there’s a 3rd season. I thought the ep was kind of sucky but definately important. They’re in Albion now and the lovers have opposing beliefs. I wonder what’ll happen next.

  31. Maedhros

Who read the novels anyway? We have an fansub translation for it?
