To Aru Kagaku no Railgun S – 04, 05

Episode 04:

() (Imoto Tachi (Shisutazu))
“Sisters (Sisters)”

Going into the fourth episode, it’s quite the commentary on human coping mechanisms, as Misaka pretty much tries to drown out the things she realized last week byyou guessed itspending the day emptying out capsule machines! Wait. What? Gotta say, that was pretty funny to see to say the leastthat, along with the various reactions from Kuroko as well. In the end however, I guess it’s like what they sayeveryone has their own way of coping with things and this seems to be Misaka’s. Not that I mind though, because it certainly made for some nice slice-of-life-isque developments to start things off…

…elements that end up being in stark contrast with the rest of the episode, which held quite the foreboding atmosphere throughout. Indeed, the build up through the episode was quite well donein the form of the cloning rumors popping up in our main group’s daily conversationand it’s something that really hammered in the sense that things weren’t quite right. Still, I was admittedly caught off guard by the additional scenes in the epiloguedespite having watched Index and knowing what to expectand it just goes to show that if someone really wants to pick a fight with you, there’s only so much you can do to avoid it. Of course, I’m speaking metaphorically in the context that you can only do so much to avoid something if you’re being put on center stageand it’s just one of those situations where you’re just going to have to face things head on, a notion that Misaka will undoubtedly have to realize in the upcoming episode.

Before going right into the discussion of the next episode though, I gotta saythere were two quotations this week that really caught my eye. The first was the question of what would you do if you had a clone of yourself, which was admittedly an interesting question to ponderreally, what would YOU do if you had a bunch of clones running round?and the second one was the whole bit where the unnamed scientist says “who knows what the higher ups are planning, we’re just doing what being we’re told to do.” And well, it’s just something that caught my eye because as a scientist, I feel like you’re crossing all kinds of ethical guidelines when you don’t care exactly what it is you’re doing just as long as you’re following orders from above. I suppose I’d think twice if my life was counting on it, but at the same time, it’s a concept that nags at me a little bitand one that admittedly brings up quite a few questions (again) about the point at which a goal can be considered worth it. Granted, we don’t know exactly what goal they’re aiming for at this point now that there’s clearly no way to reproduce level 5’s from this experiment… but it’s gotta be quite something if they’re just nonchalantly killing off living, breathing “humans” like this.

Episode 05:

(6) (Zettai Noryoku Shinka Keikaku (Reberu 6 Shifuto Kei Kaku))
“Definite Power Advancement Project (Level 6 Shift Project)”

Misaka… meet MISAKA.

With this episode comes the epic first meeting between Misaka and MISAKA… and of course the first word they end up exchanging is “Meow.” Of course. I should’ve known. But yeah, that confusion from Misaka was pricelessand I don’t blame her. I mean, what would you do if you saw a clone of yourself walking down the street, rescuing cats like this? Really, Misaka’s comment about how “this wasn’t the image I had in mind” just hits the nail on the head, and there’s just something very surreal about tailing a clone of yourself down the street, receiving free ice cream for all your troubles, and having even your clone question your tastes.

Suffice to say… the fun times are just a cover up for just how brutal things are, and even though I knew what was coming, actually seeing what happened toward the end of the episode really made me cringe a bit. Combine that with the fact that this was the 9982nd experiment (out of a planned whopping 20000!) and the fact that Misaka happens to witness Accelerator killing off her clone… and well, let’s just say I got some chills. If there’s one thing this demonstrates for sure though, it’s that Railgun S will be much more serious in nature than its firstand Misaka looks like she’ll have some tough times ahead of her as a result.

Gosh darn it though, watching this sequence of events really does just make me wonder how exactly one justifies killing 20000 people (even if they’re “artificial”) just to maybe get one guy to Level 6. I mean sure, the value of one Level 6 is exceptionalespecially if one assumes that it’s a base 10 system they use for power levelsand those that have watched Index know that there’s a lot of potential power enemies out there… but seriously, to conduct this kind of experiment (one that violates all kinds of ethics) and also potentially antagonize (or result in the death of) one of the few Level 5’s you have in the process… That’s just an insane thing to do regardless of the potential benefits and despite the fact that it’d mean that humanity will finally have achieved some kind of artificial evolution. Interestingly enough though… we haven’t even seen the arrival of the other Tokiwadai Level 5 eitherwhich makes me wonder if she’ll pull some kind of appearance during this arc or play a part in the next one.

Regardless, it’s just a brutal, brutal episode, and it just highlights just how easily things like the experiments can be hidden in the midst of a large city such as Academy Cityas well as the importance of what Shinobu was trying to do with the cash cards earlier in the season. Let’s also not forget the warning she gave to Misaka as well… the one that seems to have gone completely unheededthough understandable soand seems likely to result in some grim future outcomes. It’s going to be quite something to see how exactly things work out from here, considering the gap between now and what happens in Index.

Full-Length: 03

Author’s Note: I apologize for the lack of Railgun S coverage last week. A high school classmate recently passed away, which combined with graduation and finals… to well, you get the picture. Suffice to say, I haven’t really had time to watch anime, let alone be in the mood to write posts so… yeah. I will however, resume normal coverage of all my shows starting next week (Asobi and Kairi will continue to cover Shingeki and Suisei this week).

Just a note, this isn’t really much of a spoiler. Just a scene between Accelerator and Misaka with altered lines.

      • Gary

        Here’s a compilation of that manga striphttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B4bXaBIwQV4

Oh god I’ve been waiting for this arc since the first season and I’m not disappointed in what I’m seeing.

    • L002

I guess you are just excited as I am for seeing the re-run of Touma vs Accelerator. I always did love Touma’s “misfortune.” We will likely see more once he makes a big appearance.

      • The Moondoggie

Touma’s misfortune looks like bad-assery to everyone else.

      • sonicsenryaku

I am pretty pumped myself to see the re-run of toma vs accelerator; the first season kinda watered-down that fight; the fight was a lot more tense, dark and violent in the to aru majutsu manga as well as the railgun manga. And since jc staff seems to be pouring its budget in this season’s railgun (animation is better than first season and that seems to be consistent so far) plus what we have seen in terms of grueling violence this ep, lets hope toma’s fight with accelerator is done with the epic presentation it deserves

  2. oliviaven

    I cringed a bit….

    • Euzio

Ur not alone in that… Having watched shows like Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers, I’m pretty used to seeing limbs get blown off and stuff… But watching her leg get ripped off like that was still rather discomforting….

      • Londo

Watching a helpless girl getting her leg ripped off is really discomforting …..

      • L002

I know, I cringed as well, seeing evil Accelarator again in a misguided path before he met Touma I liked him better when he was a reformed lolicon that liked a lot like a tsunidere

      • L002

sorry type-o, I mean “act a lot like a tsunidere”

  3. sonicsenryaku

god was this ep brutal; this was the dark shift in tone i was looking for (and it gets even worse from here) Misaka is going to learn that the hard way. By the way has anyone noticed that they have given the clones normal eye pupils (noticed that last week and wanted to make sure it wasnt a fluke); thank god cuz i couldnt stand the blank eyes the sisters have had in the previous index installments. Something tells me that was done intentionally in this season of railgun…the fear in the sister’s eyes made that scene that much harder to watch.

    • The Moondoggie

I noticed about the eyes too. They always did had that dead fish eyes even after this Arc in the Index series.I attributed to them being linked to the Network.

    • UDoh

I guess they wanted to portray them as more “human-like” existence, more emotions and stuff.

    • spike

Approaching this logically, I’m guessing you’ll see the dead eyes soon enough. Given the tone of the Sisters arc the dead eyes are probably a response by the experimenters to this fight. This clone having the emotions to form a bond with Misaka over the Gekota badge was enough to distract the clone during the fight with Accelerator. From the overseers’ standpoint, that’s an unnecessary distraction (fighting Accelerator is the clones’ only purpose) and thus an unwanted trait in the clones. So they probably limited the emotional quotient of future clones to prevent similar situations from happening. Just another run of the mill future punch in the gut to Misaka I would assume.

      • sonicsenryaku

I dont think we will see the sister’s eyes gradually change because even in the manga, at this point the clones still have their dead-looking eyes Due to that, Im almost certain that this is a new artistic choice for this season specifically or this is the way jc staff will draw the sisters from this point out. If that’s the case, i couldnt be happier.

    • Vavrick

If you notice the eyes of 9982 the “bright” of her eyes is different.

  4. The Moondoggie

Can’t wait for “them” to appear! And I don’t mean the clones. What makes me like this arc is how they portray Misaka throughout the arc. She felt very responsible about her clones and treat them as her little sisters even well after this Arc. She regret giving her DNA, but she’s glad that she was also able to stopped the experiments on them, for now.Now for LN readers:I’m kinda wondering if the experiments are actually a cover-up for something EVEN BIGGER. People at 4chan say it’s to spread AIM fields across the world. Any LN reader there can confirm this?

    • Mutare

In the LN, after the experiments were stopped by Touma, Academy City sent the clones to facilities around the world since you can’t easily integrate them into society. Heck there’s enough Misakas for a small town, but yeah, it was meant to set up an AIM field for Kazakiri to travel over to Russia in her Angel form and help stop WWIII. This is the general gist of it, if there’s anyone who’s read deeply please do correct me.

      • Might be a true spoiler in the future a.k.a just guessing :I’m thinking that they are using the Misaka Network to make earth an Artificial Heaven. With the AIM spread across the earth, Index as a well of Knowledge to produce spell, Misaka network for human processor(just like those pc processors), and the 7 level 5 that can be turned into angel when level 6 is achieved, this things might be possible to be turned into an artificial heaven. And the one big mystery, Kamijou Touma’s right hand might be an absorb-er for spell that might become a spell nuke to open the key to new heaven. _Again this is just guessing.THIS IS a sci-fi LN and Anime after all.

      • I do believe that humans are an incomplete form of an angel. With tree diagram lost, Index X Misaka Network can replace it.Man I just love sci-fi guessing.

      • sonicsenryaku

sounds like some evangelion stuff; but i do agree; both Index and the misaka network are probably the next best thing towards attainment of heavenly power what with Index’s grimoires (lots of dark stuff in those books) and the almost military/mystical use of the misaka network

      • oliviaven

They already explained what the main function of Touma’s right hand is in the new testament Think of a save file or a reference point before certain phenomenons occur, which explains why he can reset the effects of power users and magicians. But do note that the origin was never mentioned

    • Mutare

In addition, I believe Aleister had initially planned for the Sisters to be spread out in the first place, but wanted to provide Touma more experience for his Imagine Breaker. Touma’s interference with Radio Noise also indirectly allowed Accelerator to ascend to “Level 6,” and Aleister gets to test out Kazakiri in her Angel form. To summarise, Aleister gains some very strong pieces in what I believe is a resistance or a possible war against the magic side. Whether or not Aleister had planned that far is up for debate but he still remains to be the most mysterious character in the To Aru universe.

    • sonicsenryaku

In regards to what your talking about; its funny because someone also brought up the question as to why academy city would invest so much time and money making clones of a level 5 electro master just to have them be fodder for another esper all for the purpose of attaining a level 6. Now i havent read the LN’s but with what i know from the combination of the two index series’, the first railgin season and the railgun manga….. Well what you heard is mostly correct; most of the students and staff in academy city believe that the city is just a place where people who want to accomplish amazing feats and obtain powers can prosper and live happy enjoyable lives. What they dont know is that some pretty evil shit is under the works (the city is pretty much a testing ground). The whole point of academy city, founded by Aleister Crowley, is to create an artificial heaven where angels/artificial angels and himself can exist; he wants to create a heaven through science. Apparently Aleister crowley was this amazing magician, but the goals he seeked reached a dead end through magic so then he switched to science so that he may further his goals. As I stated before, there are two main goals academy city is trying to accomplish: 1. create a level 6; a level 6 is pretty much on par with an angel so if academy city can achieve this, they would have pretty much unlocked the secret to making humans attain the heavenly power of an angel that magicians could only dream of. Now that is unimaginable power; shit accelerator can do some pretty amazeballs stuff and he is still only considered a level 5. But anyway, the second goal is to create an artificial heaven; that’s where the sisters come in. The testament you keep hearing about in Index and Railgun is the key. Since the sister’s are all networked through the use of their electrical powers, they are able to transmit this testament, which pretty much manipulates the AIM fields in academy city and make it so thick and dense that this once harmless undetectable event, now becomes dangerous to anyone who uses magic. As we have learned, AIM can come congregate into lifeforms and even planes of existences (such as the imaginery school district were Kazakiri comes from) By using the sister’s network to transmit testament through electromagnetic waves throughout the city, the result of making AIM fields dense can be used as a weapon to protect academy city from magicians and it can expand the imaginery school district, amking aleister’s plan to create an artificial heaven that much more possible sorry for the lengthy exposition but that pretty much answers your question

      • Nah! don’t worry about long post. It was good to read. Now I remembered how Neon Genesis Evangelion was developed.

    • SilentCid

MoondoggieLN:Yes they have spread the Misaka Network across the world to other institutions, but there isn’t any concrete evidence on their reason for sending them everywhere. A certain character in the novel makes this guess because of a hidden entity that was encountered in Academy City. Plus, the kidnapping of Last Order and her being used in the testament machine to turn Kazakiri into a Angel. Kazakiri needs the AIM dispersion fields the area for her to around in.

      • sonicsenryaku

If we are on the same page then the only reasons I could think of spreading the AIM diffusion fields past academy city is 1. Aleister wants to kill all magicians..It has been hinted that he does want to start beef with the magic side; after all he has been shown to be quite the magnificent bastard and most likely he wants to cleanse the world of magic..you know…it’s playing up the whole magic vs science science vs religion schtik and how science prevails over religion and whatnot. 2. If the AIM field is spread further out than Academy city, the imaginary school district will grow that much larger…cant have a small artificial heaven after all. Under normal AIM conditions, the subjects of the imaginery school district, at least the main players such as kazakiri (though i think she’s the only true sentient lifeform in the school district so far) are your average Joe schmoes; but when the AIM fields get dense through the testament, they become angels and are capable of pulling off some pretty amazing stuff. It has yet to be revealed what other purpose the testament is for but that is all i can think of as to what Aleister is planning and to me that makes the most sense. What still doesnt make sense yet is how Toma’s imagine breaker plays into things…Im assuming there’s a lot about it that we dont know (though the series has been dropping subtle hints that there is more to imagine breaker such as the time where he got his arm cut of by the alchemist Aureolus Izzard) and that he wants it for himself; how the hell he’s gonna pull that off is beyond me. but yea that’s as far as i can stipulate based on what the series as given me

    • Gaze of Providence

The main reason:If you have paid attention to two seasons of Index, you would know of this thing called the Imaginary Number District, another plane of existence formed from the AIM of espers. Now then, as you can see, Tsuchimikado Motoharu is an esper and a magician, and using magic injures him severely. The same principle applies to the AIM-created Imaginary Number District, as esper and magic works on different principles, so too the laws of that plane. If you watched Index II, you can see this clearly on Vento of the Front where after Aleister Crowley activates the Imaginary Number District and forcibly summons an angel from it, Kazakiri Hyouka, it immediately affects her as a magician (she uses Divine Punishment, the spell where people faint for seemingly strange reasons), injuring her.Imagine this, but in a wider scale. The Sisters are like AIM dispersing machines and are connected to a brainwave network. They and Last Order are the key required to activating and summoning the District into the world. What do you think happens when less than 10,000 Sisters are spread across the world where magicians are not uncommon but secretive, constantly connected to a brainwave network, are forced to activate the District. That’s right, it’s like an instant win button. That is the basic gist of the purpose of the clones. They were purposely let out to outside organizations under the excuse of “adjustments” because Crowley needed them outside. This is the reason why Accelerator was not cloned, because he did not have the spread as wide as that of Mikoto. All of the above paragraphs are paraphrased from the epilogue of volume 6 of Index (the one with the Golem and the appearance of Kazakiri Hyouka), which was completely cut by JC STAFF in the anime adaptation. The Level 6 Shift Project as well is a complete scam. Scientists became complacent with the world’s most powerful simulator, Tree Diagram, to believe that combat would actually work in levelling Acclerator up. Nope, Crowley has his own way of levelling Accelerator that does not need such an inelegant method. He just needed an excuse for the cloning of Misaka Mikoto. Moreover, esper abilities with accordance to Personal Reality, most likely derive from some sort of epiphany or a sort of mental maturation. And that’s why people still ask questions on why Accelerator wasn’t cloned instead.

      • SilentCid

LN spoiler @Gaze of ProvidenceI don’t think The Level 6 Shift Project was a complete scam since the scientists have never hit that milestone in having an actual person reach to level 6 because of the canceled project. Both Kakine Teitoku and Accelerator are the only ones who were able to achieve wings and that could be what level 6 was really is, to be like an Angel. I can see Aleister Crowley wanting to see someone like Kakine Teitoku and Accelerator reach that point because it’s another weapon for him to use.

  5. *v*

This episode. So well done. 9982 ):

  6. sonicsenryaku

And sorry about your loss Zephyr…hope you and your classmate’s family are pulling through ok

    • Zephyr

Yeah, thanks. I’m getting along alright. Took a bit for it to really sink in, though I guess in many ways it hasn’t, but compared to what the family must be going through… I wouldn’t dare to say it compares. They’re receiving a lot of support from other relatives and friends, so I’m hoping things will work out well as a result.

      • sonicsenryaku

That’s good to hear man, stay strong; glad to see your ok enough to blog

  7. Chen2

So Touma was able to save the first MISAKA Sister he met and had the most interaction with, but not Misaka herself. Worse she actually witnessed her death… That really explains her attitude and actions in the original Index series, and how scarred she seemed by the whole thing.

    • SilentCid

actually….Touma does not save the first Misaka Sister that he met. If you remember she left the kitten at the bookstore to do the experiment with Accelator. When Touma came back he found the sister dead in the alleyway.

      • aloysius

you need to rewatch that episode. the one that died was not the one he met

      • Lurker

Actually, you’re right but wrong scene. The first clone he met was 10031, but only for the 3 seconds where she says “onee-sama” in the park and is rushed away by Mikoto. He definitely didn’t save her.

      • What is the serial number of the girl carrying drinks with Touma, and the one feeding the cat? I know the one Touma saved was 10032. I am completely confusing.

      • Chen2

@HanaKana:The one that Touma walked with and helped carry his drinks to his apartment was the same one that he saved. At first I thought instead she’s the one that died in the alley, but when you rewatch the episode, right after he goes back to the scene and finds the body missing, looks around, and sees the group of sisters, the one carrying the dead body tells him she’s the one he has been talking to and interacted with. So I’m assuming that’s the same one he saved later (#10032), and the only one that had the most screen time in Index S1.

  8. Wanderer

Some people have fangasms over Accelerator. After watching him murder 9982, saying that that will be a hard sell for me is like saying the mid-Atlantic trench is slightly damp.

    • The Moondoggie

      >Some people have fangasms over Accelerator. Isn’t that because of the events after this arc.>Takes in Last Order>Fought Dark Matter like a baws>Takes in WORST>Builds a harem, a weird one, of his own

      • Wanderer

I can’t say I particularly care what events happen after this arc. My knowledge is restricted solely to the Railgun anime, and the spoilers I have read on TVTropes. Said spoilers go into nice detail about Accelerator’s sociopathic mass-murder spree, but fail to convince me that he has really redeemed himself since then. From my perspective, we have here a male character (that’s an automatic downcheck from me: I do not like males existing in anime), who acts like a dick (another downcheck), who smirks all the time (ten downchecks: I HATE THAT), brutally murders a girl we were made to like in his first appearance (if you think he’s EVER getting forgiven for that, I will laugh at you), and is completely invincible and immune to anyone trying to beat the dickishness out of him until designated male protagonist shows up (I think we passed infinite downchecks a few million points back).I don’t care how they may try to justify him or think they can redeem him as a character: they introduced him in a way that makes him unforgivable in my eyes.

      • Keroro Gunsou

And went full badass in the feature length.

      • Mutare

In short, after the Sisters arc he becomes a full-fledged tsundere.

      • Kah

And given what we know about tsunderes is Cuteness Is Justice!

      • Nekomimimeido

I’ve only begun liking Accelerator when he met Last Order. I’ve hated his sociopathic version but liked his new tsundere personality especially when together with Last Order Misaka!

      • LOLOLOL
From my perspective, we have here a male character (thats an automatic downcheck from me: I do not like males existing in anime), who acts like a dick (another downcheck), who smirks all the time (ten downchecks: I HATE THAT)
Sounds to me like someone is judging a character using his dick.

    • mint420

Why do you hate him? Because he killed the SISTERS?Then, let me ask; do you like the sisters? Yeah, they spent almost the entire episode showing how cute she was and her interactions with Misaka and I’m sure that got the the soft spot to a lot of the show’s watchers. You forget one thing in all of this though; she tried to kill Accelerator during their battle. MULTIPLE TIMES. Hell, in To Aru Majutsu no Index, the first time we see Accelerator, a SISTER tries to SNIPE him. It’s definitely fucked up Accelerator decided to take part in this experiment, and I know that for the most part the clones just did what they were programmed to do. However, I tend to lose my pity when you see them trying to kill him. It doesn’t justify what he’s done, but painting the SISTERS as these harmless beings that Accel did wrong is false IMO. Hating him for the sole fact that he killed them and nothing else is called having double standards.

      • Mutare

Careful there, understand the Sisters call themselves guinea pigs and are willing to act as guinea pigs because that is what they are told to do, they understand fully what the experiment is involved and accept it as “the way things are.” It’s through the Sisters’ encounters with the outside world, in particular Misaka and Touma, that the Sisters gain some sense of purpose at the end of this arc.

      • Wanderer

A point you seem to be overlooking: the Sisters, specifically 9982 in this case, were literally born yesterday. They came out of the cloning tubes with the minds of babies, and every bit of knowledge and personality they possess was forcefed into them, programmed into their brains through a machine.Accelerator chose to participate in this experiment, and to commit mass murder on this unbelievably horrific scale. The Sisters never had a choice. The very idea that there might be a choice of not fighting never entered their minds. How could it? They had no past, no experiences, no developed morals to base any such thing on, just the machine-programmed personality. They had no concept that it was even possible to choose to do something other than fight Accelerator. It was all they knew how to do. It was a fundamental fact of their existance, that had been placed in their minds from the very moment they had any sense of self at all.So yes, I will feel sympathy for them. They are not choosing to do this. They may not want to do this. They have been forced to do it, through a horrific violation of their identities as individual people. And yes, I will hate Accelerator, because he came to this point on his own, in full possession of a lifetime of experiences and developed morals, and made the choice to kill these girls. Whatever the scientists may have told him, he made his own choice, of his own will.

      • mint420

This episode showed you are wrong. You say that they have no choice which is basically the same as having no emotions, etc. Anything that can think consciously has a choice. I think this episode showed that she had plenty of emotion of her own and still decided to fight Accelerator. Once again, you are showing your double standards. It’s okay for her to try to shoot and blow up Accelerator by her choice? You can think whatever you like, but you are being hypocritical and you need to get over the fact that people “fangasm” over Accelerator. I personally like him and the fact that he made massive mistakes during this experiment just adds to it. I can see how he could get drawn into such a thing from his childhood and when he’s faced with the clones trying to kill him, I could also see why he would be merciless.

      • Wanderer

You aren’t paying attention. I said they didn’t know anything else. Give them a year living outside, heck maybe even just a month living outside of the lab, and they might be able to choose not to fight him. They would then have had enough experiences to begin to judge the rightness of their orders, killing or being killed. But as of right now, they simply do not have the mental development to think outside of their programmed personalities in that way.You are talking as if they were normal humans, with a full set of life experiences and developed personalities and morality to draw on when they make their choices. That is not the case. They are human, but 9982 is one day old. Her knowledge is limited to the basic fundamentals of society, a limited personality with minimal emotions, and her mission. An ordinary person draws on their experience and morals to understand “ok, killing someone is wrong.” 9982 doesn’t have experience or morals. They were never programmed into her. If she had had time to live outside longer, she could have developed them, but she didn’t. As a result, she simply acted on what she knew. She was not physically incapable of making a choice, she was simply unaware that there was any choice to be made. The only thing she knew to do was proceed to the experiment and fight Accelerator. She did not know that it was even possible to do anything else.

      • Germanguy

Yeah, your right. They use the Machine like a nuker. Forced memories. They dont have time to earn themselves memories. But… why the clone helped this baby inside the Car?.. Are these memories a frozen state of the original when they took the DNA Map?This little out of the Box, surprised me. They are just told to go there at right time and do the experiment…

  9. haseo0408

Mikoto would look ten times more beautiful with that long hair.

  10. Meldoy

The bodies at the end of episode 4 made me cringe.

  11. Cant wait for Touma to finally make his debut 🙂

      • schwegburt

Details from the manga if you want a forecastTouma’s not gonna show up for a while (I’m guessing 7-8 episodes). There’s a surprising amount of activity behind the scenes before Touma ever intervenes.

    • Next episode is about Mikoto and Accelerator. I guess Touma will shows up in episode 7.

  12. F

i have only one word for this BERSERK MISAKA

  13. SilentCid

The coffee shop the girls went to must be Misakas favorite because of the cups logo. http://puu.sh/2Mltj.jpgSecondly, after seeing the sister with long hair I think Misaka and sisters would look even cuter with longer hair instead of having it short.http://puu.sh/2MlwA.jpg Lastly, you cant stop Misaka when it comes to Gekota. I wonder if shell spend hundreds at a department store just to get one a limited edition one.Sisters eyes:Are different than the Toaru Majutsu no Index anime ones. I can only assume we are looking at the sisters in the eyes of Misaka to show how they look very alike? With Index series one could say to differentiate Misaka from the sisters, but after the eyes change on Nunotaba Shinobu. Someone is very determined in JC Staff to keep everything the same. One thing they at least got right if you look at the Index novel volume 22 they are in fact brown and not blue.Episode 5:This episode really was awesome for the fact that it shows how fun the Sisters interact with the Original. Like the Sister eating Misakas mint chocolate chip ice cream, and pretending she didnt do it at all. To receiving her first gift and finding out it was lame in a tsundere kind of way. Then the tone of it really did change with her saying sayonara which we all know means goodbye, but many might not know (In till you seen this episode) that there is a finality when you say that word. Like what Misaka said, Ja Ne which has the See you tomorrow feeling to it. I wish I knew what was running in the Sisters head of hers. Was there a small wishful hope that there will be a tomorrow? Then you had Accelerator showing just how brutal he can be killing another sister like it was nothing and deciding to go to the convenience store afterwards. It was sad the sister who was badly wounded and maybe thinking back her short time spent with Misaka while holding the Gekota pin gift in her hands before being crushed. This is the darkest Railgun episodes yet and we are going see a Misaka thats usually has an upbeat attitude most of the time in a different light.

    • Longhaul

The eyes are simply a newer art style, and to be frank its was a great idea to differentiate the clones eyes from Mikoto’s in the way they came up with.

      • schwegburt

I think the idea behind the same eyes is to highlight how Misaka and MISAKA are so similar. Especially since Misaka’s the central character and Index she merely played a supporting role, it emphasizes the differences in behavior vs identical appearance.

      • sonicsenryaku

ehhh i have to disagree; i thought it was a un-inventive and distracting way to differentiate the sisters; If it’s a new art style then im glad jc staff finally decided upon it because these sister’s are meant to be clones…exact copies. Plus the fact that they now have pupils draws your attention to subtle emotions the sisters cant normally produce with their face and makes them more engaging to watch. In my opinion, the brutality of the experiments is amplified because of the production staff’s decision to give them pupils because the clones feel that much more alive and it hurts more to see them die.

  14. PTH

Killing 1 clone per day means it will take 54.75 years to kill 20k. Accelerator must be killing quite a few per day then.I liked how they didn’t kill tension in the end by skipping the ED and letting the dramatic music continue.

  15. Sigmond

Nooooooo poor clone…she was adorable…..hoped she would survive but had a feeling she would not…. now only if maybe two or three more are introduced hopefully one with a super mean streak compared to their big sister….and maybe long hair…yeah….one can only dream. but now i am interested in reading all the manga’s now anyone know if their for sale?

    • Lurker

The english manga is available up to Vol 7 (Seven Seas publishing co)…

  16. Bukszie

This is just the 9982 experiment. If I remember right it took 10076 experiments before toumaa stepped in

    • sonicsenryaku

i think it was up to 10032 where the experiment got stopped

  17. Keith

What I don’t get is why pick the No.3 Railgun for the production of the clones and the project? Why not the other 5 Level 5s? Especially since No.2 Kakine who’s capable of creation is more suited to fight against Accelerator, or the gemstone Sogita Gunha whose genuine potential possibly exceeds even Accelerator?

    • Marina2

1.Railgun clones are not initially made for lv6 shift programs2.AC need MISAKA network

    • kylone

Well, they had the Railgun’s gene map on file…

    • Answers: 1a. Misaka has the largest AIM field out of all the Level 5s.1b. Level 6 Shift project was never meant to succeed. Aleister actually planned it to stop at some point but Touma stopped it ahead of schedule. In which the reason is:1c. The intended plan of the clones was to spread all of them throughout the globe in order to spread the AIM fields for the Imaginary Numbers District. In which its final purpose was already mentioned above but I’ll repeat:1d. Aleister wants to create an artificial heaven on earth using the concentrated AIM fields. That was seen in Index II with the September 30 attack with Angel Kazakiri.Also:2. Kakine’s Dark Matter is quite unstable and only after the events of vol15, he was used for more experiments. Case in point would be those soldiers sent to kill Hamazura in WWIII arc that used Dark Matter.3. Gunha is presumed to be a Gemstone, aka a natural born esper. And people on AC are unsure what really is his power despite being a level 5 so he was ranked #7. So it’s a bad idea to use him for the cloning project when even the person, Gunha, isn’t even sure what his power is, excepting thinking it’s about GUTS!!

      • Anonymous

Man, this sounds like one of them Xanatos Gambits out there, whatever our protagonists do, Aleister comes up on top. lolhttp://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/XanatosGambit

      • Keith

To be honest it makes even less sense what AC intends to do since he knows that the experiment was meant to fail right from the start, so why not just send all 20k sisters all over the world to spread the AIM field? And if he really wants to create a level 6, why not choose Sogiita Gunha? While his powers remain unknown, Ollerus has stated that if Gunha truly understood his powers he would have defeated Ollerus, the man who nearly became a magic god. Doesn’t that mean that Gunha would have become a Level 6 once he did that? Unless the idea of “god” that AC wants is another type of “god” . AC is seriously the most unknown char of all time…

      • Lurker

Not quite…Touma stopping the experiment was the “excuse” to spread them around the world. To the outside world it was AC cleaning up its mess. Starting out by spreading military-grade clones around the world would have raised some red flags for the non-magic types, and the magic types might have figured out their minefield purpose sooner..

      • BecauseAleister doesn’t want anyone to get wind of his plans. The Level 6 Shift project was just an excuse for him to obtain a sizable chunk of clones for him to use for his plan for later. Ordering his minions to produce clones just because he likes it will arise suspicions. And 20k clones is just a lot and will definitely make all sides of the world wary of Academy City(not that everyone isn’t watching every movement of the City but still).Besides, Aleister never banked on this method for Accel to evolve. He had other plans for him.As for Gunha, again his powers are still unknown so banking on him to obtain Level 6 isn’t a wise idea. The fact that they can’t even analyze his powers is a hindrance already as they won’t be able to formulate an experiment like the Radio Noise project to make him Level 6.Also, why would defeating Ollerus make Gunha a Level 6? That doesn’t make any sense. Ollerus isn’t someone that makes you level up once you defeat him(if you could defeat him). And yes, Aleister’s idea of heaven, angels and gods differ from the magic side’s. That’s the whole deal with Aleister Crowley, a famous magician, being on the science side. He’s using a different method to bring heaven on earth, make artificial angels and reach the power of God.

      • Keith

Wow Since the experiment was meant to “fail”,that means 9982’s death was completely pointless . AC should’ve just sent Touma to the start of the experiment and tell him to beat the crap out of Accelerator . Then we don’t need to watch clones after clones getting killed just for the lulz

      • Well, he never did bank on Touma stopping the experiment but it still achieved his original plan to have the experiment stopped and have the clones be spread throughout the world. It was still within his margin of errors, or so he says.Aleister also has plans for Touma and his actions for him are calculated even though he’s an “irregular” because of IB. And I’m kinda used to using AC as Academy City but I guess you’re using it as Aleister Crowley.Oh shi- It’s the same letters and he’s the head of Academy City. Kamachiiii!!!

    • sonicsenryaku

As already stated above leveling up accelerator was just a cover up, though it begs the question; how come none of the scientist question the logic behind how killing 20000 sisters would magically turn accelerator into a level 6. What needs to happen in order for an esper to evolve is to, in a sense, give greater meaning to their personal reality. I doubt that killing 20000 clones would have given accelerator the epiphany he needed. We can look at the other alternative: accelerator gets “experience points” for every esper he kills. But how exactly is he getting stronger when he isnt even trying when it comes to killing the clones. I think it was hinted at, though im still a little fuzzy on this so im not sure if its correct, but I believe that due to misaka’s type of AIM field (it is after all the reason aleister specifically needs misaka clones to create his artificial heaven), if accelerator defeated one of the clones, the AIM emitted by them somehow transfers to accelerator and acts as the experience points to make him stronger. If that actually isnt true, that’s more of a reason for the scientist to have even questioned how an experiment such as this would have worked. Pretty much, accelerator was just a pawn used to get the scientist to keep creating clones without questioning anything though you’d think they’d question the logic behind it if there was no real way to measure how much stronger accelerator was becoming from killing the clones or why killing the clones would level him up. it’s actually kinda nice how things connect from all the previous installments in the series…even if the writing and execution has been a bit poor

      • Response(tl;dr):The reason they proceeded with the experiment was because the Tree Diagram told them to. It’s that supercomputer in space that can predict the weather one month in advance perfectly and the one that Touma blew up in the first season of Index. Its first prediction was that a level 5 should kill 128 Level 5s without fail so that one can become a level 6. Of course that was impossible as there are only 7 Level 5s. So it recalculated and came up with killing 20,000 Level 3s. That’s where the Sisters enter here. The original purpose of the cloning project was to create clones of Level 5s for military use. But they discovered that they could only be at Level 3 at most so it was scrapped. Then that prediction from the Tree Diagram came and they revived the cloning project since they can produce Level 3s to be used without grabbing random ones from the city. While it does seem like load of bull as to why the scientists of AC would agree with this, do take note that they’ve exhausted their methods to reaching the mythical Level 6. And that supercomputer is something that predicts accurately and came up with this answer, no matter how ridiculous it seemed. Also, no scientist would ever pass off on a chance for an experiment, whether it succeeds or fails. If this fails, then they move on to the next one.And as the Level 6 Shift project proceeded, Accel did improve in some ways. He noticed he can change the vectors of blood flow. And he discovered how to manipulate air vectors in his fight with Touma and create that plasma ball.As for the epiphany thing, do take note as well that the study of espers is far from complete. They haven’t yet understood the nature of AIMs so thinking of making espers fully realize their Personal Reality is something that probably didn’t cross their minds. Besides, if this epiphany you’re talking about is that “awakening” of Accel(and to an extent, Kakine), that was something pretty new even to Kihara Amata, a Kihara who helped develop Accel’s powers, so that says a lot about their study of espers.

So is it true that we are going to see Touma stopping Accelerator again?I know that Misaka is going to lose to AcceleratorBut why are we re-watching Touma vs. Accelerator? I thought this series is based Misaka.

    • Longhaul

Misaka being the MC does not change events that happen, its all about how you get there.

    • Marina2

Yes.However, that’s is not the main focus/highlight of sister arc in Railgun. Watch OP for the hint

    • Gaze of Providence

But why are we re-watching Touma vs. Accelerator? I thought this series is based Misaka.

1.) Despite what people seem to forget with all the filler crammed in. The Railgun anime is still based on the Railgun manga. And in the Railgun manga, we see the inevitable showdown as well. It is reasonable to believe that, despite JC STAFF’s poor track record, that scene will be shown again.2.) Touma vs. Accelerator is plainly one of the most significant character defining events in both Index and Railgun. Here, we see that Accelerator can be beaten for the first time and sets off his road to redemption, as well as the fact that despite all the bluster and bragging Mikoto has shown as being a Level 5, there are things that she cannot do on her own. Yes, I know that lesson was crammed into the Poltergeist Arc last season and made Mikoto look like an amnesiac who forgot the lesson that there are things she cannot solve on her own, but regardless of that, the battle where Mikoto and her relationship with her own Sisters is one of the most important scenes in Raildex. If a scene from a light novel has been adapted 4 times, you bloody well know its important.3.) The first adaptation of that scene in Index I utterly fails to capture Touma and Mikoto’s desperation during the former’s fight against Accelerator. Touma doesn’t even look beaten up for goodness’ sakes.4.) Yes, but even you know that is not always the case. Kuroko and Uiharu had focus on their own last season. The focus maybe on Mikoto’s point-of-view, but this focus can extend on all the characters that support her, including Touma.5.) The story is a prologue to Touma’s involvement to the Sisters Arc, it would be foolhardy to think that would be redacted and have Mikoto simply standing on the iron bridge before trying to help him later.6.) Finally, as been shown by the many novels and side-stories, Toaru Majutsu no Index is a world of heroes, where one story has someone deal with one problem while another has someone else deal with a different problem. In this story, the powerful Mikoto is the hero, but that does not entail that there are no other heroes running around, there is no reason for other heroes to cross her paths, and there is definitely no reason for her to step aside for a hero to face the problems she cannot handle on her own. As shown in Index, especially Touma, there are things heroes cannot do on their own. Remember that Railgun is first and foremost a sidestory of Index.Addendum:Not adapting that scene would practically spit on the whole reason the Railgun manga was made in the first place: and that is for volume 3 to be in the manga:

Ogino: As the mangas editor, I started the project because I wanted to do Volume 3 of the novels. But to get there, we have to get through Volume 1, what was going on in the background related to that secret, and her relationship with Kamijou.

  19. c2710

Truly a brutally magnificent episode. Spamming through Index 1 and 2 as well as Railgun 1 and bit of the wiki, I knew this was coming from a mile away. When Mikasa was with MIKASA, it was very melancholic. We all know how Accelerator’s like so I won’t comment much but that closing scene, where MISAKA 9928 crawled after the badge that her onee-sama gave, I was screaming lle a mad man. Death flags were furiously waving all around.

    • CarVac

Mikasa? Wrong series. (Shingeki no Railgun?)

      • Londo

Mikasa with Misaka’s powers. I can totally see the Titans getting their asses kicked in an instant. Fire a railgun at the back of the neck instead of using the blades

  20. Longhaul

You could not have asked for a better job on this episode than what we got.

    • Longhaul

^episode 5Also, remember the comment Telestina made about the students in AC all being guinea pigs.

  21. Synchonicity

Because Tree Diagram predicted that the fastest way for Accelerator to achieve level 6 is by battle with Railgun.Blame Tree Diagram.

    • Anonymous

Thankfully for Mikoto, Tree Diagram is now toast, thanks to the action of a certain magical index that went berserk. (Chronologically, this Sisters’ story arc takes place after Touma saved Index from having her memory erased)

      • Gaze of Providence

Oh goodness, I can’t wait to see that scene referencing Tree Diagram to be adapted.

  22. Anonymous

#9982 as an individual knew what she was up against, hence her meaningful farewell to her onee-sama, knowing they will never see each other again. Even near death, she cherished the Gekota badge Mikoto gave her, the only spiritual solace she gets from an otherwise mundane and brief life, designed to only be killed off for a supposed greater purpose. Her death will not be in vain, for it will (Index I spoilers in case there’s someone who’s not seen the Sisters arc there)kick start events leading to the Sisters’ salvation from their cruel fate.Seeing Accelerator upgraded to protagonist status by the end of Index II, it’s easy to forget what a magnificent assshole he used to be (he still is quite an asshole, but now he’s OUR asshole) before he got “nerfed” for saving Last Order, a kind of redemption of sorts for his massacre of Last Order’s “sisters”. Salute to Okamoto Nobuhiko for his continued topform in providing Accelerator with that batshit insane laughter.

    • Rasen

He was a magnificent villain, but in the same way that the scientists are. After killing 10,000+ clones, a person would have to stop thinking of them as people and instead view them as guinea pigs. That or go crazy.

  23. Anonymous

BTW, who is in agreement that Haruue is so cute for being such a glutton? Prompting Uiharu to need to buy a new ricecooker, and for Mikoto to show off her haggling skillz.

  24. Gaze of Providence

So they removed the scene from the manga where Misaka 9982 is picky with tea after tasting one for the first time and then referencing it in episode 5?Episode 4’s first half was a utter drag, yes, we get it, Mikoto is deluded (but aren’t all espers delusional as so they can create Personal Reality), but they really didn’t need to drag out the scene with Haruue and her swimsuits, especially because her body was so disproportionally it looked terrifying. Moreover, her scene cuts away more character exploration for Misaka 9982, which is kinda needed as so her death would not seem hamfisted.——————Episode 5 is a nearly 1:1 adaptation of the manga, and the direction and music was superb and beautifully crafted. That is how you make an adaptation JC STAFF please take notes.

    • We still have a blu-ray extra scene part i guess

      • Gaze of Providence

And yet, I have never known JC STAFF to add any additional content to their Index and Railgun episodes.

    • Rasen

Why would JC Staff take notes? That makes it sound like a different studio is working on this series.

      • Gaze of Providence

JC STAFF has a tendency of forgetting that they can do better.

  25. Gaze of Providence

Addendum: POOR MISAKA 9982, SHE DIDN’T HAVE A LEG TO STAND ON. THERE ARE NO BREAKS ON THE TRAIN, ONLY AN ACCELERATOR.

    • Airas

Why did I click on that SPOILER??? WHY?

      • Gaze of Providence

Don’t break your leg over it, you might get crushed.

  26. gawrshness

Question: We already know how the Sisters Arc concludes based on Index season 1. So how does the arc intend to go here?

    • Gaze of Providence

Well, you’re going to find out in the next few episodes now, shall we?

  27. Flappy

Well thanks for the post!Hope everything is alright at your end.

  28. Litho

Meh, all just different POV of what we know already. Let me know when that philosofapping Touma makes and appearance.

  29. hallo

this episode made other anime series that is showing right now look nothing. awesome episode!

  30. ewok40k

poor, poor MISAKA… all of them!I knew how brutal was Accelerator, but the last minutes of ep 05 really hit the nail suare on the head.I am eagerly awaiting the rest of the arc, with Mikoto facing off against mercenary espers

  31. Germanguy

i just wonder, when the “Enemy” Level 5 will begin to kick in in the Story. This Rocket kinda Level 5, and these laser finger level 5 and so on…

    • Germanguy

..perhaps they will use them to get ride of our level 5, because she knows now to much? that would make a good connection, but we know that Railgun will survive. Why? Index timeline

      • ewok40k

Worry not, if you are lookin for more lvl 5 opponents for the Railgun you should get exactly your wish soon… Mikoto is in for a helluva fight! And I don’t mean Accelerator only.

  32. Radler

Holy crap. God I hated seeing every second of that fight. I kept thinking Misaka ought to show up any second or if not, Touma showing up complaining about his misfortune. Seeing the brutal way Accelerator killed off one of the Sisters made me very sad. I realized then that the Sister was actually saying goodbye to Misaka that time they parted for the first and last time. Kick his ass Railgun!!!!

  33. Kentaiyoshimi

I haven’t seen Index nor the first season of Railgun. Any suggestions on what I would watch to appreciate this 2nd season? Or can I watch this as a standalone?I watched ep 5 on a whim, and it turned out to be pretty good. I always assumed Railgun was a happy go lucky show, but this turned out to be not what I expected at all.

    • Gaze of Providence

Since JC STAFF magically removed the connection between the Level Upper Arc and Sisters Arc, absolutely none. Of course, you can still watch the first half of Railgun to get a taste on how brainwave networks work as that is an important term in the Sisters Arc, but overall, there is absolutely nothing that stops you from just watching Railgun S as stand alone. If you insist, watch Index Season 1 episode 1-14 (Episodes 10-14 if you don’t want to bother) to get a grasp on where Railgun S’ time period currently is, as well as to contrast Touma’s POV with Mikoto’s during the crucial arc, as well as to marvel at JC STAFF’s ineptitude at adapting the light novel.Superior choice:Read the novelsRead the manga

      • Rasen

They didn’t completely remove it. Mikoto was commenting about how because of the Level Upper incident, she thought it might be possible for people with similar brainwaves to communicate/detect each other.

    • Wanderer

I would suggest watching the first season of Railgun so that the first episode would make sense to you. Otherwise you’d have no clue who Haruue or her friend in the hospital are. Likewise, it will help you better understand all the characters. Aside from that, I see no requirement in watching any of the other material. Judging from my reactions to this, and comparing them to the reactions of people who’ve insisted on overexposing themselves to all the other material (Index animes, the mangas, the novels), I would say if all you’re interested in is Railgun you’re better off following my example and just watching the two Railgun anime series.

    • aloysius

Watch the first season of Railgun and then this season, because it picks off directly where the first season ended. I would actually recommend that you NOT watch Index, or if you do, treat them as 2 seperate shows so you won’t get confused by the timeline.

  34. sadakups

Know what, I thought that it would be a case of “seeing it before”, but episode 5 proved me wrong. The damn episode is fucking cruel. It’s basically having a moment with someone before you see them die in front of you hours later. And to think that I already like Accelerator in Index S2. Now I hate him again.

  35. Jyang

I honestly don’t understand why people think Railgun S is just like re-watching the Index version…seriously the Index anime version showed barely 5% of this arc. [I never read the LN or manga so I don’t know how much was covered there] Maybe people who never read the Railgun manga underestimate how much depth this arc goes to…Anyway…BEST ADAPTED EPISODE I’VE SEEN FROM JC STAFF!!! Watched the episode 3+ times cuz it was that good! I hope they could keep it up for the rest of the arc!

    • sonicsenryaku

you’re absolutely right, this goes into much more depth than the index arc ever did so why anyone would perceive the series as a rehash is beyond me; perhaps because those who have seen index know how this is going to end.

  36. Jason Isenberg

Shit seriously hit the fan (pardon my french)

  37. elior1

i sure tomua will show up in 7 or 8 episodes becouse there are things which need to happen before this

  38. D-LaN

No comments on the “9928” and magically appearing Endymion tower? XD

  39. Sissy

Chronologically speaking, this is confusing me.

    • The Moondoggie

It’s the habit of the author to make To Aru events have big gaps in between to stuff sidestories…
